In 1892, at the age of 27, Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee with his partner, Joseph Peffer, catering to "Jobbing" trades. In 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was established. By 1916, they had printed their first catalog and had more leather cutting machines than any other company in the U.S. They introduced the concept of "Job-fitted" boots in 1917, becoming a major supplier of boots to the U.S. Army during WWI.

In 1938, the company took its first steps into safety footwear production. By 1942, they celebrated their 50th anniversary and converted to producing all-military footwear during WWII. This move made military boots popular among civilians as well. In 1943, the company workers formed the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, and the outstanding relationship between management and workers continues to this day.

The year 1964 saw the introduction of their best-selling boot of all time, the Official Boy Scout Boot: The Hike n' Camp. In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, which led to the creation of the "ThoroGard" division specializing in high-tech occupational safety footwear. In 1992, they celebrated their 100th anniversary.

In 2000, Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through ESOP. In 2001, they donated 300 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero after the September 11 terror attacks. In 2014, they introduced the 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted lifestyle boots. And in 2017, they celebrated their 125th anniversary, demonstrating a renewed commitment to upgrading their domestic facilities and manufacturing methods.

2018 marked their 130th anniversary with the opening of a new factory in Merrill, WI and the launch of their first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. Sales continued to increase in 2019 as Thorogood gained popularity and expanded with many new styles on the horizon.
