In 1892, Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee with his partner, Joseph Peffer, serving "Jobbing" trades. The company was eventually formed as Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. in 1900. By 1916, they printed their first catalog and became the U.S. leader in leather cutting machines. In 1917, they introduced the "Job-fitted" concept and became a major supplier of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I.

In 1938, Weinbrenner took its first steps into safety footwear production. During World War II, they converted to producing all-military footwear and gained popularity among civilians as well. In 1943, the company workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, and their outstanding relationship with management has continued to this day.

In 1964, Weinbrenner introduced their best-selling boot of all time, The Hike n' Camp, which became the official Boy Scout Boot. In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, and they created the "ThoroGard" division for high-tech safety footwear. In 1992, they celebrated 100 years in business.

In 2000, Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Following the September 11 terror attacks in 2001, Weinbrenner donated 300 pairs of work boots to Ground Zero for the recovery efforts. In 2014, they introduced the 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted lifestyle boots.

In 2017, Weinbrenner celebrated its 125th anniversary and demonstrated a renewed commitment to upgrading its domestic facilities and manufacturing methods. In 2022, they celebrated 130 years as a company with the opening of a new factory and the launch of their first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. In 2023, sales continued to increase as Thorogood gained popularity and introduced many new styles.
