In 1892, Albert H. Weinbrenner and his partner, Joseph Peffer, opened a cobblery in Milwaukee to serve the "Jobbing" trades. In 1900, they formed Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. and printed their first catalog in 1916. By 1917, they introduced the "Job-fitted" concept and became a major supplier of boots to the U.S. Army during WWI.

In 1938, the company ventured into safety footwear production, and in 1942, they celebrated 50 years in business by converting to all-military footwear during WWII. These military-style boots gained popularity among civilians as well. The company workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union in 1943, and their excellent relationship with management continues to this day.

In 1964, Weinbrenner introduced their best-selling boot of all time, The Hike n' Camp, which became the Official Boy Scout Boot. In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, and the "ThoroGard" division was created, specializing in high-tech safety footwear. In 1992, Weinbrenner celebrated its 100th anniversary.

In 2000, the employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP, and in 2001, they donated hundreds of durable work boots to Ground Zero after the September 11 attacks. In 2014, they introduced the 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots. In 2017, Weinbrenner celebrated its 125th Anniversary and demonstrated a renewed commitment to upgrading their domestic facilities.

In 2022, Weinbrenner celebrated 130 years with the opening of a new factory in Merrill, WI, and the launch of their first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. They continue to see increasing sales and popularity in 2023.
