In 1892, Albert H. Weinbrenner, aged 27, and his partner Joseph Peffer, opened a cobblery in Milwaukee to serve the "Jobbing" trades. In 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was established. By 1916, the company had printed its first catalog and had more leather cutting machines than any other company in the United States. In 1917, they introduced the "Job-fitted" concept and became a major supplier of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I.

In 1938, the company took its first steps into safety footwear production. By 1942, they celebrated 50 years in business and converted to producing all-military footwear during World War II. Their military footwear also became popular with civilians. In 1943, the company's workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, and the management and workers have maintained an outstanding relationship ever since.

In 1964, Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. introduced The Official Boy Scout Boot: The Hike n’ Camp, which became their best-selling boot of all time and is still available today. In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, and the "ThoroGard" division was created, specializing in high-tech occupational safety footwear. In 1992, they celebrated their 100th anniversary with the theme "A Century of Lasting Quality."

In 2000, Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). In 2001, shortly after the September 11 terror attacks, Weinbrenner donated 300 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero, with another 200 pairs following. In 2014, they introduced the 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted lifestyle boots.

In 2017, Weinbrenner celebrated its 125th anniversary and demonstrated a renewed commitment to upgrading and improving their domestic facilities, machines, equipment, manufacturing methods, and computer systems/programs. In 2022, they celebrated their 130th anniversary by opening a new factory in Merrill, WI and launching their first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. Sales continue to increase in 2023 as Thorogood gains popularity and expands with many new styles on the horizon.
