From the brand: In 1892, Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee with partner Joseph Peffer, serving "Jobbing" trades. In 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was formed. By 1916, they had the most leather cutting machines in the US and printed their first catalog. The concept of "Job-fitted" boots was introduced in 1917, and Weinbrenner became a major supplier of boots to the US Army during WWI.

In 1938, the company started producing safety footwear, and in 1942, they celebrated their 50th anniversary by converting to all-military footwear during WWII. Military footwear also became popular with civilians. In 1943, the company workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, and their outstanding relationship with management continues today.

In 1964, they introduced the Hike n' Camp boot, which became their best-selling boot of all time. In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, and the "ThoroGard" division was created for safety footwear. In 1992, they celebrated their 100th anniversary.

In 2000, the employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP. Following the September 11 attacks, Weinbrenner donated durable work boots to Ground Zero. In 2014, they introduced the 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted lifestyle boots, and in 2017, they celebrated their 125th anniversary, committing to upgrading and improving their facilities and manufacturing methods.

In 2022, they celebrated their 130th anniversary by opening a new factory and launching their first western wear product, Square Toe Wellingtons. Sales continue to increase in 2023 as Thorogood gains popularity and introduces new styles.
